The June meeting of the Webster County Genealogical Society is at 1 p.m. today at the society’s room at the Fort Dodge Public Library. Anyone with an interest in family history is welcome, even those who aren’t members of the society.
A genealogy bargain
For a short time, you can buy the Family Tree Maker Deluxe software for $30.99 on Amazon.com. The normal price is $69.99.
It says that this version is for Windows 8, but under system requirements it says it will run on Windows XP, Vista or Windows; 7.
Read the reviews. There are people who love the software and people who hate it because they had problems.
One of the benefits of this package, though, is that it includes a three-month subscription to Ancestry.com. Currently, a six-month subscription is $77. So this is less than half of that cost. You do have to provide credit card information, as they will charge your card if you don’t cancel when the three months is up.
On Ancestry.com, they have two versions of Family Tree Maker: Family Tree Maker
2012 on sale for $29.99 and Family Tree Maker 2012 Complete on sale for $59.99. These each have a 14-day subscription, but you can get that anyway if it’s your first time signing up. The version on Amazon.com is Deluxe.
The sale on Amazon.com is for a short time – I was told until May 11, although I don’t see that on the Amazon.com page. It is in CD format, so you have to wait for it to arrive. It should have free shipping if you pick the standard shipping option.
This is not an endorsement. The Webster County Genealogical Society and its members and officers do not receive any benefit, financial or otherwise, from any of the named entities for any consideration or mention on this website. It is for informational purposes only. -Carol Foltz, president, Webster County Genealogical Society

Swedish Genealogical Research Workshop
Do you have Swedish ancestors? Need help in locating them? This Workshop will focus on the research basics for finding one’s Swedish families here and in Sweden. There will be one-on-one sessions using Swedish and American computer programs to help you to move forward with your searches for your ancestors.
The workshop will be held Friday, April 5th from 9 am to 5 pm at the Swedish Immigrant Museum in Stratford and the Stratford Public Library.
Abby Friedmeyer, whose Mathre and Engstrom ancestors settled in the Stratford area will combine her professional computer skills with her own research experiences to help you learn more about your Swedish ancestors. Also helping will be Pat Conklin, who has been very involved with Swedish family research in Webster County. Jane Arends will help you move forward with your research by sharing her knowledge about American and Swedish research resources. Since 2000, she has been researching and writing family history books about her Swedish ancestors who settled in Hamilton County.
Pre-registration is requested as room space is limited and workshop packets need to be prepared. For more information and to register, contact Jane Arends by email: mja6391@gmail.com, by mail at 3790 Majestic Lane NW, Prior Lake, MN 55372 or call 952-855-4901.
To maximize the personal sessions, send a note with a specific request for help and known information before the workshop.
No fee is charged. Participants are encouraged to make a donation to the Swedish Foundation of Iowa. It is a registered not-for-profit foundation that has created the Swedish Immigrant Museum at Stratford. Its theme is: “Iowa Swedes, 1845-1945”
This workshop is sponsored by The Swedish Foundation of Iowa’s ‘Swede Bend’ Settlement, Inc.
819 Goldsmith Street, Stratford, Iowa
Family history resources
You may not realize that the Webster County Genealogical Society has resources that can help any genealogist or family history researcher – not just those with family in Webster County.
One of these resources is Family Tree Magazine. The society has a subscription to Family Tree Magazine, and the March/April issue is in.
Articles include: “Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks,” “Rx for Heirloom Scrapbook Preservation,” “Genealogy in the Cloud” and “Uncovering Black Roots.”
Each issue also includes city guides. This issue focuses on Cleveland, Ohio, and Providence, R.I.
Besides magazine subscriptions, the volunteers on duty will be glad to help you find what you are looking for, or assist you with learning how to fill out pedigree charts and family group sheets.
